How to Attract the Oriole
to your Backyard

There is nothing more stunning then the sight of the beautiful black and orange oriole in your backyard!

Orioles prefer open woodlands, river groves and tall shade trees with shrubby undergrowth. They have adapted well to yards, parks and avenues of trees along streets. They like to nest in tall poplars, willows and cottonwoods. The signature of the oriole is its beautifully woven hanging nest, suspended pouch like from the very tips of tree branches.

Orioles are primarily insect eaters, but in summer and fall eat fleshy fruits and berries. Plant fruit and berry producing plants such as mulberries, serviceberries, brambles, cherries, mountain ash, nuts and figs, which are among their favorite plant foods.

Some of the best foods you can offer orioles is orange flavored nectar, orange halves and grape jelly or orange marmalade. Orioles are larger birds, and require a specially designed oriole feeder filled with orange flavored oriole nectar. These feeders offer larger perches and larger feeding ports.

If you really want to spoil your orioles, offer them grape jelly and orange halves in a special fruit & jelly oriole feeder. You can also put out chopped fruits like pears and apples.

They may come to your suet feeder. Try offering orange, insect or berry flavored suet in a suet feeder that offers good perching space.

As with all backyard birds, a source of fresh water is very important. Many wild birds, like orioles, do not visit seed feeders, but will readily come to a bird bath for drinking and bathing.
