Bat InformationBeneficial BatsBats are a great way to reduce flying insect pests around your home and garden. Honestly, BATS are GOOD! Bats do a remarkable job of eating mosquitoes and flying insects. Bats are an important part of our environment. The bat is nature's way of removing night flying insects and we doubt seriously if any blue zapping light could ever match the abilities of one little harmless bat. Bats have been clocked at eating up to 600 insects an hour, and most will consume between 2000 to 3000 insects per night. Bats are disappearing from the earth at alarming rates. In most species the female bat has only one baby per year and without the help of man-made bat shelters these gentle creatures are running out of housing in today’s modern world. You can help bats by providing housing, not disturbing them in their roosting spots, and avoiding man made insecticides. Providing a bat shelter is one of the best ways to keep these beneficial creatures around. Mount your bat box securely to the Eastern side of your home, approximately 12-15 feet above ground. For warmth, your bat house should receive at least 6 hours of morning sun. In hotter areas, shade in the afternoon. Be sure to locate it near a permanent source of water, marsh, lake or river. Don't be discouraged if your conditions are not perfect, even natural roosts are seldom ideal.
